چکیده
Glossary Adaptation A genetically controlled trait that has evolved by natural selection. Analogous traits Similar traits that evolved independently in different species in response to similar environmental pressures. Comparative psychology The study of mind and behavior in nonhuman animals. Convergent evolution The process by which natural selection produces similar adaptations in different species that live in similar environments. Homologous traits Similar traits possessed by different species as a result of inheritance from a common ancestor. Phylogeny The evolutionary development and history of a species or higher taxonomic grouping of organisms. Primatology The discipline that studies nonhuman primates. Trait A morphological, physiological, or behavioral characteristic of an organism.

A comparative analysis of serial ordering in ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta).
Research over the last 25 years has demonstrated that animals are able to organize sequences in memory and retrieve ordered sequences without language. Qualitative differences have been found between the serial organization of behavior in pigeons and monkeys. Here the authors test serial ordering abilities in ring-tailed lemurs, a strepsirrhine primate whose ancestral lineage diverged from that...
متن کاملPrimate numerical competence: contributions toward understanding nonhuman cognition
Nonhuman primates represent the most significant extant species for comparative studies of cognition, including such complex phenomena as numerical competence, among others. Studies of numerical skills in monkeys and apes have a long, though somewhat sparse history, although questions for current empirical studies remain of great interest to several fields, including comparative, developmental,...
متن کاملPrimate polemic: commentary on Smith, Couchman, and Beran (2014).
Smith, Couchman, and Beran (2014, pp. 115-131) take issue with recent attempts to account for so-called metacognitive behavior in nonhuman animals in terms of simple processes of associative reinforcement learning. Their arguments rely on appeals to unconvincing and equivocal empirical evidence, and a misrepresentation of the nature of associative learning. Although the existing data do not rul...

متن کاملComparative developmental psychology: how is human cognitive development unique?
The fields of developmental and comparative psychology both seek to illuminate the roots of adult cognitive systems. Developmental studies target the emergence of adult cognitive systems over ontogenetic time, whereas comparative studies investigate the origins of human cognition in our evolutionary history. Despite the long tradition of research in both of these areas, little work has examined...
